The north of the main island of Zanzibar (Unguja) is a place of rare beauty, perhaps because it has been little exploited by man and tourism. The extreme northern tip of the island allows the meeting between the rough waves of the open ocean and the calmer waters of the Tanzanian sea. Here the tides play an important role and perhaps this is also why tourism has struggled to establish itself. But today these still unexplored places are what most attract fans of African landscapes. The coast between Nungwi and Kendwa, for example, is a paradise to be discovered inch by inch.

Nungwi the rebel

Nungwi fishermen are very jealous of their beautiful land. And they are right, it must be said. For years they have opposed mass tourism and have hindered any attempt at a hospitality business in that area. Only a few years ago the new generations have decided to open to foreigners and hotels and restaurants have begun to appear on the beaches of Nungwi.

The beauty of Nungwi lies precisely in its people, in their skills in fishing and in using – and building – the famous Zanzibar boats, the dhows. You can swim, dive, visit the village and the brand new aquarium where you can admire the beautiful sea turtles free in their habitat.

Kendwa, sea and sunsets

Not too far from Nungwi is the large beach of Kendwa. A wide expanse of white sand, surrounded by palm trees and lagoon lakes, Kendwa forms a curve passing from the northern to the western coast with the result that you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets,   here. People come to Kendwa to enjoy some luxury resorts, animations, events but also just to enjoy the beach, the sea, diving and long walks in the warm light of the setting sun.

How to get there and where to stay

If this new frontier of Zanzibar tourism attracts you and you want to learn more about the beauty  of the coast between Nungwi and Kendwa, get ready for a slightly longer journey. From Zanzibar airport, these two locations are about an hour-and-a-half drive. Renting a car is possible but if you are not familiar with the roads of Zanzibar it is better not to venture out. Instead, prefer a taxi or one of the many transfer companies that can provide a driver who can also act as a guide.

Tourist resorts are growing more and more between Nungwi and Kendwa. The second is a little better equipped, as it opened earlier to reception. Among the many choices you can make in Kendwa we point out: Bravo Kendwa Beach, Zuri Hotel, Palumbo Resort, Gold Zanzibar Hotel with spa. If, on the other hand, the somewhat provincial atmosphere of Nungwi attracts you, try Double Tree Resort or the Z Hotel – if you are looking for services and comfort. Many accommodation facilities in the village are housed in the fishermen’s houses and need a greater spirit of adaptation, from you. Among the cutest choices: Zuzanu House and Palm Tree Villa. Other choices can be found on the appropriate search engines.
