Another common excursion on the island of Zanzibar is in Jozani Chwaka National Park to spot the endemic Zanzibar Red Colobus Monkey.
The Jozani Forest is located in the centre of the Jozani-Chwaka Bay National Park, 38 km South East of Stone Town. The forest is a great place to encounter many indigenous varieties of flora and fauna
The Zanzibar Red Colobus is a specie of monkey endemic to Unguja, the main island of the Zanzibar Archipelago. Also known as Kirk’s red colobus due to the name of the first person who focused on it, it is now classified as an endangered species and most of the remaining exemplars are all around the forest of Jozani. Population is still decreasing, and conservationists are working with the local government to plan an effective strategy to protect the habitat and the population. The biggest problem is to protect the environment, that on the island is limited.
Other species of animal that you can spot are Blue Sykes’ Monkeys, Bush Pigs, Aders Duiker Antelopes, Elephant Shrews, Chameleons and numerous birds and butterflies. There is also another small endemic animal in Jozani forest that you can’t miss to spot. Is the Phrynobatrachus ungujae; the Zanzibar Dwarf Puddle Frog, a micro frog that lives only in Zanzibar.
In add to the fauna, you will also be able to admire the majestic flora of the equatorial forest, with big trees of mahogany, palm tree, coconut and sycamore.
For sure a beautiful half day to spend in the middle of the nature and wildlife.
