Zanzibar: Marine Turtle release

The 15th of June 2019, in Zanzibar, we partecipated at the event of Mnarani Turtle Aquarium of release of more than 50 marine turtles.

The conservation project is called Mnarani ‘place of the lighthouse’ in Swahili, and is located at the northern tip of Zanzibar Island in the small village of Nungwi near the lighthouse that marks this landmark. The pond is actually a large, natural tidal pool in the coral rock behind the beach. It was originally set up to rehabilitate and study marine turtles that had been caught in fishing nets, and the project developed to ensure that local baby turtles were also protected.

We were lucky in find 2 tickets still available! We reached Mnarani Aquarium in the afternoon for a quick briefing and to pick up our t shirt of the event, and then we moved by boat to Kendwa beach, where everything was ready for the release of the marine turtle! A wonderful full moon scorted us during the short journey.

Time for last advices and let’s distribute the turtles!

3… 2… 1… RELEASE THE TURTLE!!!!

It was very impressive to see them run straight into the sea and disappear under the full moon light in the darkness of the water.

A real spectacle of nature.

And after the adults it’s time for the young!

Without any doubt a one life experience to try!

We are not going to see them again on that beach, but We like to think that in the future our sons, maybe, one day, they will meet them one more time.

FOR THIS AND OTHER EXCURSION ON THE BEAUTIFUL ZANZIBAR ISLAND:
